Scrambling, Maps and Mountain Skills

I was joined by 13 super keen mountain walkers last weekend for a Mountain Training Mountain Skills course, including 7 ladies from Surf Senioritas. All looking to learn how to get more form their mountain walks We started with a short session in the classroom looking at how to plan a day in the hills - weather forecasts, sources of information and making the day suit the ability / ambitions of the group and matching it to the weather and terrain. We also did a quick bit of map reading theory.

The emphasis of the 2 days is about getting on the hills so we split into 2 teams and headed to the Glyderau range, from the Ogwen Valley. We all headed for Llyn Bochlwyd where Mal and his team set off for Bwlch Tryfan and Bristly Screes while i took my team along the Y Gribin scramble. Ideal routes to practice some navigation, movement skills on steep terrain and route finding. We passed each other on the top, Mal descended via Seniors Ridge and me down Bristly Screes. A grand day taking in the summits of Glyder Fair and Glyder Fach.

We all met up in the evening at the Douglas Arms for a presentation by Mal and I on all things mountains - from the UK to Everest via the Alps.

Next day was forecast to be a bit damper so we set our sights on Moel Siabod. everyone was very keen to do some more scrambling so we headed up the lovely grade 1 Daear Ddu Ridge before navigating our way down to the valley.

All in a very enjoyable weekend for Mal and I - thanks everyone.
